The District was started in 1971 by a group of Irish Spiritans who left Nigeria after the civil war. The District celebrated the silver jubilee of its presence in Ghana in 1996

 
Statistics
From 1995 to 1999, the District was composed of 8 members (7 Irish and 1 priest from the West African Foundation, who is doing vocations ministry). 5 members are involved in parish work in three dioceses of Obuasi, Kumasi and Sunyani. One is working in the National Catholic Secretariat, Accra. Currently there are 4 members of the District working in Ghana, now as part of the WAF.

 

Mission priorities
The priorities of the District have been to be at the service of the local church:

to build up parishes, particularly in rural and undeveloped areas;
works of education in informal way;
vocations' ministry both for the Spiritans and the local church and catechetical work


It is trying to work out the establishment of a Spiritan work in education in Kumasi.

Community life
With the exception of Bantama, the confreres live alone in their missions. They meet regularly in Bantama with confreres in Kumasi for socials and relaxation.

The District of Ghana was officially merged with the West African Foundation, which will become a Province in 2001.
